Dasra — empowering adolescent girls to fight their battles.

adolescent girls., Dasra

When I talk about women empowerment I don’t just mean to give them an equal status in the society, instead I believe in giving them the right to choose, right to be themselves and right to exercise themselves as human beings and not commodities to be used, abused and then thrown by the men folk in their family. And so when I was approached by Dasra, a non profit organisation that works with philanthropists and other nonprofits to create large scale social change, I couldn’t say no and here I am blogging about their efforts.

Dasra’s motto for the year 2014 is to encourage women empowerment by focusing on adolescent girls (ages 11-19). Unfortunately, India is plagued with issues when it comes to adolescent girls such as domestic violence, child marriages, lack of educational and livelihood opportunities, poor menstrual hygiene and many more.

Yes these are the pressing issues that plague the girls of our country and one needs to blog about it, write about it create awareness about it. And so with the help of NGOs like Dasra we can spread the word. Domestic violence is not a national issue form what I have learned it’s a global issue plaguing women of all societies irrespective of their caste, creed and culture. Dasra is doing more than just empowering women and adolescent girls it is trying to give them their self respect thus introducing them to their self worth.

I think instead of me writing about their efforts I will give few links where you can read about their efforts. These are few of the links I would like to share with my readers

This is the video you must watch and of possible please share

World Water Day!

World water day

Today i.e. March 22, is the World Water Day! Water is a precious natural element without which one can’t imagine to survive and yet it has become one of the most costly natural element today mainly because of the fast depleting forests that help in rains. Concrete jungles have also given way to water shortage and many developing countries including India face the problem of water shortage every summer.

Water as we all know and are taught from the beginning is an important natural resource that needs to be conserved and consumed wisely. And these days even play schools are taking necessary steps to educate kids about the goodness and the importance of water. Water has been a great source to get rid of all the toxins from our body and considering the fact that a human body is made of 55-75 percent of water, it is but natural for our body to crave its aphrodisiac.

A normal human being can survive long without food but not without water, because he can live on an empty stomach but not with a parched throat. Apart from other benefits water is the main source in creating electricity and hence the theme of this year is Relationship between water and energy.

Talking about the relationship between water and energy is Mr Snehal Desai, who is the global business director for Dow Water & Process Solutions, based in Edina, Minnesota and is responsible for developing and implementing growth strategy for DW&PS and leading the 1800 people who work in the business. (Dow) Read about his views on the theme here.

While we are discussing the importance of water in our daily lives lets have a look at the history of water day, how it came to being and what were the reasons to mark one special day for water. The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 of 22 December 1992 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Dwarka: the plight of battery-operated rickshaw pullers

Battery-operated rickshaws, Dwarka, New Delhi

Dwarka – the planned sub city of National capital was supposed to have all the amenities of a complete city with no major faults. However, since its inception the city has been plagued by numerous problems like garbage dumps on the roadside, pot-holed roads, uncovered sewage holes, no public transport in the interiors of the city and use of public parks for all the other activities except for its actual purpose among many others. But the one I am going to discuss through my blog is about the plight of battery-operated rickshaw pullers, who are trying to earn their humble living by providing quick transport facilities to the residents of Dwarka at reasonable prices. However, it seems there are people who can’t let these poor people earn their living in a decent manner.

It was one of those days when I was looking for some inspiration to write a post on my blog when I got a call from my son’s van driver that he will not be able to pick the kid up from school hence I need to make necessary arrangements. Oh hell! If only I knew how to drive it won’t have been a hassle but then this was not the time to think that. So I shut my lappie, changed my clothes and went out to pick up my son from his school. Son has a fascination for battery operated rickshaws, as they go faster than normal cycle rickshaws and have loads of space for him to spread his legs and sit like a king. This apart, the lower flooring of the rickshaw makes it easier for him to board and de-board it without my help.

So I stepped out, crossed the road to where the battery operated rickshaws had their own stand at Raja Puri Circle and asked one driver if he will go to Bal Bharati Public School, the drivers pointed to one rickshaw standing last in the line and said this will go to Bal Bharati Public School.  I boarded the rickshaw and it was then the driver started talking about the plight of all the battery-operated rickshaw pullers. He said his name was Naresh and his rickshaw is known as Raftar in the area. He also said, “Battery rickshaw operators face severe threats from local goons who keep snatching their rickshaws to ply them on other routes. There are no number plates on these rickshaws and there are no licences needed to operate these rickshaws hence anyone can repaint them and operate them on other routes outside Dwarka and we can’t do anything about it.”

He also told me that just few days back a rickshaw puller was hit in the back of his head with a brick and his rickshaw was snatched from him. Though I was moved to hear his plight, I was little sceptical about the entire incident and wanted to have to some substantial grounds to take further action. So when next time I needed a rickshaw I boarded another one and this time I started the conversation with another rickshaw operator Ramesh of rickshaw named Chetak. When he confirmed the incidents and also told me the risky areas from where these rickshaws are being snatched and one of the areas being the Raja Puri Circle. I told him that I will see how can I help them but then a thought struck me and I asked whether or not they have filed a complaint in the nearby police station and this is what he told me.

“Police knows about the plight of these rickshaw operators but can’t do much, as there are no number plates that can be traced. And once these rickshaws are repainted it becomes difficult to recognise them,” he said.  Interestingly these rickshaws just have specific names painted on them and both the operators and the rickshaws are known by that name. So, imagine, if that identity is taken away from them they have no way to prove that it is their rickshaw.

My concern is to get these operators some justice because believe it or not they have made commuting within Dwarka quite easy. Please do help me in my efforts to get them justice and a required number plates and licences. Concerned authorities please do look into the matter. Looking forward to your solicitous support in the matter.

Morning Story and Dilbert

There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He’s very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other men.

He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant’s confidante. Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Confessions of a Proud Mom!

Mommy, Son

Today as I collected your final result from the school, I realised how fast you are growing up my boy! It just seems yesterday when I held in you my arms for the first time when you were a tiny baby – looking up to me for all your needs and I responded with a vow to love you and protect you from everything and anything that might harm you with all my might. And over the years, I would like to think that I am doing fine! What say Boy? Today, when I collected your report card and saw your result, I couldn’t muster words of appreciation other than very good Ansh! Hence all I did was to hug you tight and kiss you to show my love and appreciation!

You are my precious gem, one who has taught me the meaning of patience and together we will grow up to be the best mom-son duo. You also taught me how with just one simple kiss I can become the world’s best mom from world’s worst mom! And so today when you are about to close one chapter (from pre-primary) and enter another one (to primary school) all I want to tell you is SON YOU ROCK!!! GO AHEAD AND ACHIEVE AS MANY MILESTONES AS YOU CAN AND REMEMBER THAT WE (YOUR DAD AND I) WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, AND GUIDE YOU! But ultimately it is and will be your life and hence you will have to mould it according to your wish expertly guided by the morals and values we instil and are instilling in you.

All the Best Dearest Son for your new Academic Session! May you always keep winning laurels and make us proud parents. Yours everloving mom!

Close encounters of the smelly kind

Racold Heater, reborn everyday with hot water, smelly encounters

In our day to day life we meet many people whom we would like to ask #what’s that smell boss? But owing to their positions, seniority and sometimes the reason being that it is not polite to comment on somebody’s body odour we tend to keep quiet. However, there are times when we are forced to comment in sarcastic tongue #what’s that smell boss, as the odour is so repulsive it becomes difficult to be even in their vicinity. And in my first job I had the misfortune of working with one such person. Problem – he was at a senior position and talked with loud gestures of hands thus spreading his body odour in the entire area. The AC in his cabin added to our woes and all of us dreaded going near his cabin.

But then, one day, a client, came visiting our office and the moment she stepped inside his cabin she commented what’s that smell boss. Smell?? What smell? Yeah smell! The kind of smell, which comes when someone has not taken bath for couple of days and sweats a lot! Hiding his embarrassment at the revelation he came out of his cabin and started asking if anyone of us are carrying a deodorant? Deodorant!!?!! No, none of us had it and then one of the senior colleague asked why did he need a deodorant?

“The client sitting inside feels that there is a bad smell in the cabin,” this man answered. So, the lady persisted, if there is a bad smell in the room shouldn’t you be looking for a room freshener instead of deodorant?  Ah of course, room freshener, why didn’t think about it before, he said to himself. Perhaps because you know that room freshener won’t solve that problem. Anyway, he got the room freshener and sprayed it liberally in his cabin. But instead of helping it worsened the problem so much that we ended up losing that client and our senior got a lesson of his life that bathing can never replace anything and if he doesn’t want to end up losing all his clients he need to take a regular bath so that no one can dare say again #what’s the smell boss?

Travelling Smart with Skyscanner

Art and Culture

My stint at a travel industry opened me to lots of obscure places that are abundant in natural wealth, have some historic importance or natural attractions or are best suited for some adventure sports. In many cases these places offer a much-needed respite from the cacophony of the city life with its calm, serene atmosphere, thus inviting tourists to explore them. And one such destination I would like to visit in 2014 is – Gopalpur-on-Sea. Renowned as the best beach resort in Orissa by seasoned travellers, Gopalpur-on-Sea is a pretty laidback seaport village, situated at a distance of some 180 kms from Bhubhaneswar with a charm of its own. Away from the hustle-bustle of the other temple towns of Orissa, Gopalpur on Sea promises a break that I have been craving for long now.

Anyway, another thing that I learnt there was that we Indians love to travel with all…

Child sexual abuse, right touch, wrong touch

As parents we often face this dilemma, whether to talk to our children about the sexual abuse that is commonly prevalent amongst young kids or not. I am sure most mothers would agree with me when I say that we worry about how to bring this topic into our conversations with our little ones while maintaining their innocence and also not scaring them away. Well here are few pointers I learned and am still learning as a mother of a five and a half year old son.
