Happy Birthday John Tyndall

Exquisite Gift Baskets

Happy Birthday to British physicist, John Tyndall, born this day in 1820!

Tyndall is known for his investigations on the behavior of light beams passing through various substances; he gave his name to the “Tyndall effect” – the scattering of light by particles of matter in its path, thus making the light beam visible – Included in this, he suggested that the sky is blue due to the scattering of light by small particles of water.

Better known as an advocate of scientific education, rather than as a great scientist, Tyndall’s chief scientific work was in his research of radiant heat. He invented the fireman’s respirator, made better fog-horns, and one of his most important inventions, the light pipe, led to the development of the modern day gastroscope.
