Jaisalmer, Rajasthan: In order to retain the grandeur of Sonar Fort Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, one of the living forts in the world, the Jaisalmer district authorities have started to implement a ban on hotels and restaurants within the fort’s premises. The authorities are also planning to make the Fort horn and polythene –free zones.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting held in Jaipur. According to Aditi Mehta, Additional Chief Secretary of Art and Culture, the Jaisalmer District Administration and Municipal Council said, “Hotels and restaurants have been directed to shift outside as they are the main reason for seepage of drain water into the foundation of the historic structure.”

Parshuram Dhanka, Additional District Collector said, “It has been decided to serve notices to hotels for closing down their activities.”  Dhanka added that directions have been given to take action on demolishing encroachments inside and outside the Sonar Fort. Irregular constructions that have spoiled the beauty of the Fort will also be removed.

He further said that the action plan will also include shifting of the vegetable market to another area.
